What to expect from your massage

At Newtown Massage and Spa, we customize your massage to your needs to ensure you have an enjoyable and relaxing experience every single time. Whether you’re here for the treatment of neck pain, sciatica, hip pain, lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, overall tension or quite simply relaxation, we will be happy to recommend the perfect therapist for you.

How to Book

To schedule your appointment, you can either use the link on our website, book a session on your smartphone through the MINDBODY Connect app or simply give us a call on (215) 598-7750. Our knowledgeable front desk staff will be happy to discuss your needs with you and recommend an appropriate modality, as well as a therapist who performs this.

Wherever possible, please give us 24 hours notice if you need to cancel your massage, so that your therapist has the opportunity to fill your slot with another client. If less than 24 hours notice is given, we charge a $25 cancellation fee.

*If you are experiencing cold and flu like symptoms, fever, or chills we ask that you please reschedule your appointment. There will be no cancellation fee for having to reschedule less than 24 hours notice due to illness.

Meet and Greet

For your first appointment we request that you arrive 15 minutes early so that you can fill out a Massage intake form.  For subsequent sessions, we request that clients arrive at least 5 – 10 minutes ahead of time so that we can start and end your massage on time out of respect for the clients after you. We encourage our clients to give their therapists feedback throughout the session if they would like anything, e.g. pressure, to be adjusted. Your therapist will need this information to tailor their massage to you. They will also ask you about your goals for this particular session and going forward if you have booked a package of sessions, which is generally recommended for those looking to treat an ongoing condition such as chronic pain.

Many clients ask how often they should schedule a massage. Our response to this is that it depends on the specific condition you are treating, as well as your personal goals. For instance, athletes often find that more regular massage enables them to perform more consistently, whereas those with sedentary desk jobs or professions putting them at risk of repetitive strain injury can reduce their risk of chronic pain with more regular massage. As a rule of thumb, we recommend at least once a month for maintenance and weekly or bimonthly for conditions requiring more in-depth treatment. In some cases, e.g. after a car accident, our massage is also covered by insurance. In addition, our massage packages are a great deal for those who would like to make massage a regular priority in their life.

Starting Your Massage

After filling out your intake form and discussing your needs, your massage therapist will take you to one of our tranquil and spa-like massage rooms where you can look forward to relaxing on a comfortable massage table with a cozy heating pad (if needed) and soft, clean sheets covered with a blanket. You will find a chair for your personal belongings. Once your therapist has ensured you have no further questions, they will leave the room for you to disrobe to your comfort level (unless your treatment is a fully clothed massage such as Thai). For some people this means removing everything and others prefer to leave on their undergarments. Either option is fine because your therapist wants you to feel as comfortable as possible. Once disrobed, lie under the top sheet of the massage table. Your therapist will tell you whether they are starting you face up or face down. If it is face down, they will ask you to place your face in the face cradle, which they will adjust as needed once reentering the room after first knocking to check you are ready.

On reentering the room, your therapist will check you are comfortable and whether anything needs to be adjusted and then the massage will begin. To preserve your modesty, they will only uncover the part of the body they are currently working on, and the rest of you will be fully draped at all times.

Giving feedback:

We respect that some clients prefer to chat whilst other like to remain silent. We will follow your lead. It’s up to you to tailor your massage. In addition, don’t ever hesitate to give feedback during the massage. We want to ensure you have the best possible experience.

During Your Massage

Before beginning the session, your therapist will ask you to alert them if, at any time during the session, a technique or stroke they are using is uncomfortable. Depending on your specific needs or requests, your massage therapist will either perform a customized full-body massage (for general relaxation and stress reduction) or focus on the specific parts of your body that you have requested. Newtown Massage and Spa uses only the highest quality hypoallergenic massage products for your massage.

Communicate:

This is your customized massage. If you have feedback on pressure, room temperature, lighting … let us know.

Post-massage

At the end of your massage session, your therapist will leave the room for you to re-dress. They will meet you at the front desk where they will give you a cup of water, and where you also have a chance to reschedule with one of our front desk staff if you so wish. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any concerns you may have once you go home. We want you to feel like you are in good hands, and we truly care about the outcome of your particular condition.

Hydrate:

After a deep tissue massage, it is common to experience soreness similar to that of post-workout syndrome. Water helps flush out the minerals released during your massage while rehydrating your muscles and reducing potential soreness. Epsom salt baths are also recommended.
